If I Straighten Out My Arm And Try To Grip

If I straighten out my arm and try to grip something, my index finger knuckle feels like fire shooting up my arm to my elbow. The pain is so sudden and severe it takes my breath away. What could be wrong? My thumb is very weak as is the pad on my palm is sore.
