If a person is given large doses of streptomycin as a child to combat infection from a radical mastoidectomy and has bilateral hearing loss in the severe to profound range, does this mean that there is a strong possibility of mitochondrial dysfunction? Should this adult be considered to be susceptible to drugs which have mitochondrial toxicity potential?
