I'm A School Nurse And We Just Had An IEP

I'm a school nurse and we just had an IEP meeting for a 3.6 y/o child. During the meeting his parents reported that he eats plastic and towels at home. He doesn't do this in his pre-school setting at all. We are thinking that there might be some anxiety at home that induces the behavior, but the mom was asking us what to do about the behavior? Her pediatrician has recommended vitamin supplements, including iron. My question is, are there any specific deficiencies that lead to a child eating plastic? He has eaten an entire section off of his bed. We are thinking a mental health referral is in order, but wanted to make sure we're not missing anything organic. Thank you for your time.
