I'm Experiencing Moderately Severe Pain In The Tip Of My

I'm experiencing moderately severe pain in the tip of my right index finger when I apply even moderate pressure downward. It just started all of a sudden this morning. I don't know the cause. Can I get a sprain or a break in the tip of a finger? Do I need to see a doctor? What can I do myself? Thanks
