I'm Having Violent Coughing Attacks, I Have Been Coughing Since

I'm having violent coughing attacks, i have been coughing since October, nothing my doctor gives me is helping. I'm also having a little bit of pain in my right hip down my right leg. I'm not sure what is going on. I usually have this cold around this time of the year and my doctor would give me steroids and that would work. This time it didn't. I now using an inhaler and if that doesn't work. I will have to have chest xrays. I was just curious as to what it could be. Thanks
