Is Codeine Recommended For Treating COPD?

Should my mother aged 79 be taking codeine 2 twice a day if she has copd .Are there any other pain killers she could take instead that have no side affects .she has had bad constipation and has had an op for Prolapse bowel last year .yours thankfully l lyons
