Is Doxycycline Advisable For Tick Fever?

my sister just got back from the mountains, and is showing signs of tick fever. everything i have read on cdc sight suggest doxycycline is only treatment. Is this the case, and should she insist on that? I have also read that early treatment is key, but the test results will not show positive intill 7 days after symptoms.
