Is Mucinex Advisable For Cough In An Elderly Person?

My 83 year old mother is having a problem with phlegm in her throat. When she tries to eat, she begins to cough and has trouble swallowing. I have been giving her soft foods such as grits and mashed potatoes, but this morning she became so choked on the phlegm that she threw up. I bought some mucinex yesterday and have given her one dose of that. Is there anything else you could recommend?
