Is Thyroidectomy Advisable For Person With Atrial Fibrillation?

I am 59, scheduled for a Thyroidectomy on Feb. 10th. Goiterous nodules cover. 3/4 of my Thyroid gland on both sides, 3 are at least 3-4 cm each. Surgeon said they are benign but beginning to extend to chest and one is a hard nodule. I feel I should have the surgery while I'm in good health, but I do smoke 1 pkg of cigarettes per day. I do have atrial fib. too, but cardiologist said it is controlled w/toprol. Do you think I should indeed have this surgery and what are my risks?
