Is A Hole In The Heart A Fatal Condition?

Hi Doc, I have a brother and he is turning 25 this March. While he was at work he fainted and was rushed to the hospital, and doctors found out he has hole in his heart. I am so worried about him. Can it cause death? Is having that hole in our heart a serious illness? Please enlighten me :( -Nelly the sister
