Is Cholesterol Level Reading Of 6.9 Dangerous?

My cholesterol reading in November was 6.9 and in February it was 7. Is this level dangerous? My doctor prescribed Atorvaststatin (10 mg once a day). I have read so many adverse reports about statins, so much so that I am afraid to take them. I have a very healthy diet but I could make some changes. I play golf regularly and take other exercise too. I am extremely fit for a woman of 76. Would you recommend that I started taking the statins?
