Hello doctor!
I am 23 years old and have a few questions regarding ovarian cysts.
I had a 4cm cyst removed laparoscopically six years ago. Last week, I went into the ER due to extreme pain on my left side. The doctors discovered I had a large ovarian cyst, 9cm in diameter. They performed an emergency laparoscopy to remove it and fortunately they were able to keep my ovary intact. I had an ultrasound 6 months ago and everything was fine at the time, so the cyst grew quite rapidly.
My surgeon told me that I'd probably have to take birth control pills to prevent future cysts, but I'm very concerned about the side effects, particularly the facial discoloration, hair loss (I already lose a lot of hair and can't afford to lose any more) and inability to wear contact lenses (I am a contact lens wearer). Is there any way I can prevent cysts from growing without having to take the pill? Can I go to regular ultrasounds to keep track of the cysts? What other options do I have? I am not sexually active.
If I do not chose to go on the pill and get another cyst, the possibility of me losing an ovary is quite high. Would I be able to live a normal life with one ovary and conceive in the future?
Your opinion and advice will be most highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
