Is Cramping And Less Of Bleeding Normal?

I don't take birth control and would rather not; however I've been told by my Gyno that I have dysmenorrhea which is a big word for painful periods. My question that I would like answered is I cramp extremely bad, but I barely bleed, is that normal for having such bad cramps?
