Is Heavy Bleeding Post D & C Considered Normal?

hello... I just had a D & C last 2nd week of August 2010 due to thick uterine walls, which caused my profuse bleeding..
This is the first menstruation i had since my D& C and there is a little pain in my lower left abdomen.
Is this normal for a woman like me at age 4o to experience this pain Doc? what first aid treatment can i do to alleviate the pain?
