Is It Normal For The Tampon To Hurt While Its

Is it normal for the tampon to hurt while its in? Even though, i didnt see any cotton after i put it in. I just got mine and im freaking out. I put it in the right place and after awhile i pulled it out and there wasnt any blood on it but in my pad there was and there was a grayish greenish color on it instead of blood.
