Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it possible to be allergic to the capsule of vacomyicin? My 90 year old mother was being treated with 250 mg oral suspension as an inpatient for c-diff (she was discharged last night). She was prescribed 6 more days of vacomyicin, 250 mg, q 6 hrs for 6 days. She is unable to swallow pills whole so everyting is either crushed or suspension. We separated the capsule and crushed tge end with the medication in it. She received 2 doses but after the second, her lips swole up really bad. I spoke with the pharmacist & the physician, the physician said to take the capsule away from the medication and crush it. We were trying to keep her therapeutic but had to give her Benadryl due to her lips. Her next dose was due at 4 pm but we couldn't give it to her. Her physician said it's okay as long as she doesn't miss more than 3 doses. She was also on flagyl iv while hospitalized. She was also prescribed 10 meq of potassium 1x daily in which I gave her shortly after the second dose. Any suggestions or could she possibly be allergic to the gel in the casules? She took the oral suspension in patient with no problems. We could not find a pharmacy in the city that offered the suspension until next week. Any input is graciously appreciated.
