Is It Safe To Shave Vagina Before Delivery?

My mother told me that she shaved her vagina before she gave birth to both me and my sister, and says that I should do the same. My doctor hasn't mentioned anything yet and I haven't asked. It seems a little strange though. Do I really have to do that? I will if it is better for the birth, the doctors or my baby.
