Is It Safe To Take Atenolol For A Fib?

I am a retired internist. my wife was in a local hospital 5 days ago for new onset rapid a fib. Everyone there said they NEVER use digoxin anymore. No attempt was made to convert. She is on 50 mg atenolol bid. and has a follow up friday with cardiologist. I was and am flabbergasted.
