I am a part-time caregiver for a friend who had a stroke last April. Her primary physician is telling her he is worried about encephalomalacia, and telling her that she should be using a medication called cerebrolycin that is sold in Europe but not in the United States. To my knowledge, the primary had not seen her brain scans. The neurosurgeon she has seen has not recommended anything and made no mention of encephalomalacia at her last visit, which was a follow-up visit after her reviewed her more recent MRIs. The neurologist she saw in January had never heard of cerebrolycin. So my questions are these: do all ischemic stroke victims suffer from encephalomalacia? Is it progressive? And is cerebrolycin safe to take if one is taking Plavix in addition to medications for blood pressure, glaucoma, etc.?
