Is It Safe To Use A Cast Of Fiberglass On Broken Foot?

I broke the 5th metatarsal in my left foot on Jan. 9th. I was put in a half cast which has fiberglass in back and a stretch bandage. I was told at the hospital emergency that I would be called for an orthopedic surgeon appointment within two weeks. Now four weeks later, I am told that I will not get an appointment for another 5 to 6 weeks. My concern is whether the bone is healing properly and what instructions I need to follow, when can I put weight on it? Is it possible to get some type of boot that would facilitate going to work? I do not want to chance anything, but need an orthopedic consultation which I cannot seem to get any time soon. Is it okay to wait so long to have it checked?
