Is Major Depression Disorder Related In Any Way To PTSD?

Is major depression disorder related in any way to PTSD? If a person witnessed the result of a serious crime as a first responder, and future events spark a similar reaction to that first time, is that major depression disorder or something else? Are the treatments for those two things the same or totally different?
