Is Sudden,long Period With History Of Missed Periods While Being On Birth Control Normal?

im on a birth control that allows me to miss my period n ive been doing that for about close to 6 months. the doc stated that i can have my period when i wanted to, but now out of that blue my period came on n it been on for more then a week now. is this because i missed so many?
