Is Vaginal Contraceptive Film An Effective Substitute For Condoms?

I wanted to hear from a doctor the effectiveness of using VCF by itself with out a condom. Condoms make me very uncomfortable and irritated. I've never gotten pregnant while using them but my new boyfriend is worried and wanted to hear a more professional opinion.
