Just Today (Feb. 23, 2016) A Sessile 6 Mm Polyp

Just today (Feb. 23, 2016) a sessile 6 mm polyp of benign appearance was found in the proximal sigmoid colon. A single-piece polypectomy was perormed using a hot snare. The polyp was completely removed. These are the doctor's words. Can you tell me why I had a polyp, is it potentially cancerous?
