Last Evening I Had A Sudden Pain On My Right

Last evening I had a sudden pain on my right big toe, when I got home from work and stepped out of the car. Like something hard under toe toe. I was wearing sandals, the kind with part between the toes. It hurt to walk, but I managed. A couple hours later I noticed a big bruise on the side of the big toe. This morning the bruise spread around the toe, and now it is an inch or so down the foot, still in the general area of that toe but much farther afield from the first spot. It is purple in some areas, more red in others. I'm thinking somehow a blood vessel broke and the blood is just spreading out really far, but my husband says I should have it looked at. It is swollen a bit. What do you think?
