My 14 Yr Old Son Has A Golf Ball Sized

My 14 yr old son has a golf ball sized lump in his right calf. The lump itself is painless but any type of physical exertion is painful. He is very active physically and has grown almost 8 inches in the past year. Family Dr says possible Lipoma or worse case Tumor? Any advice? Suggestions?
