My 18 Year Old Son, Has Had Very Bad Sore

My 18 year old son, has had very bad sore throat since tuesday. He had the quick strep test and it came back negative...havent heard on the longer test. it is very painful to swallow and the pain is moving up his ear...he has taken three aleve and put ice on it . Any suggestions?
