My 3 year old daughter has been having episodes of temporary arm paralysis/or weakness. They occur on either arm, but only one arm at a time. When they started, they lasted a couple of hours and her motion was really limited. Now they can last for a full 24 hours, but she seems to have a little more girdle strength. Still, when she runs across the room, the limp arm doesn't even sway, just hangs straight. Trying to dress her, she will lift her limp arm about 30 degrees and then use the other hand to pick her arm up. She has had unremarkable MRI of the brain, CT and CTA of the head and neck, echo, EKG and EEG. Also, she has had serious problems with gluten. She lost weight from 8 mos of age to a year, and it didn't look like she was digesting anything at all. Her diarrhea was like brown water with undigested chunks of food. It didn't get better until I cut gluten from her diet. Being gluten free is hard and requires the whole household to be involved, so the diet hasn't lasted. When eating gluten, her gastric problems haven't ever been as bad as they were when she was a year old, but she will oscillate from diarrhea to constipation. Also her eczema clears up off gluten. Is there any possibility the arm episodes are gluten related? Everyone says they can't possibly be, and it doesn't seem to make sense since they are transient in nature, but she hasn't had arm episodes when avoiding gluten either. Or are there any other leads on what could be triggering the arm episodes? She complains of pain, but doesn't cry about being in pain.
