My 75 Year Old Mother Woke Up With A Swollen

My 75 year old mother woke up with a swollen ankle and pain. She has had diabetes for over 40 years now and visits her doctor frequently! She is active and stills drives everywhere. Just an FYI she lives in San Juan, Puerto Rico. What would have cause her ankle to get swollen?
