My 81 Year Old Mother Had Her Appendix Rupture Back

My 81 year old mother had her appendix rupture back in November. She thought she just had the stomach flu. She was treated in the hospital for a week with IV antibiotics and also a drain was placed to help get rid of the infection. Her doctor now wants to do surgery to remove her appendix. Is it necessary to have the surgery when the infection seems to have cleared ?
