My 9 Yr Old Son Has An Earache With No

My 9 yr old son has an earache with no fever. I gave him 3 children's acetaminophen,but he's getting little to no relief. He's 44 pounds. I recall that to lower a fever you could give ibuprofen at same time. I've never tried, but would it work in this situation?
