My 98 Year Old Mother Yesterday Had A Sharp Pain

My 98 year old mother yesterday had a sharp pain go across her back just under her shoulder blades. It has continued and she has to shallow breath or it is worse. We had her X rayed this morning, but it showed no breaks or cracks--just the degenerative spine one would expect. I don't know what to do next. The care center seems at a loss, too. Mother can't take pain meds without causing mental disturbance after a few days and she hates that. Any suggestions?
