My Big Toe Nail Started Lifting About 4 Months Ago.

My big toe nail started lifting about 4 months ago. Today I removed my toe nail polish and the whole nail lifted off revealing a new nail. It hasn't been sore or causing any pain. When it started lifting I noticed it looked bruised. Any suggestion on what could have caused it.
