My Boyfriend Of 2 Years And I Have Unprotected Sex

My boyfriend of 2 years and I have unprotected sex while using birth control . I have never shown any genital symptoms of herpes nor he before and about 2 weeks ago he noticed a little something that looked like a bug bite on his penis and went to a de who looked at it and said don't worry and than went to another doctor who did blood test and said it came back positive for HSV2 . Side note ; he and I have not even had sex in a month or more . He just told me about his result and told me to get tested , which I will in a few days . What should I know about this type of herpes : contracted through ? How ? Can it be dormant for years ? Why did he all of a sudden notice something ? How at risk am I ? Possibilities that I unknownly infected or possibilities that he was unfaithful and if someone doesn't have an outbreak how likely can they infect someone else ? As well as anything else I should know . I'm not worried about how it could affect childbirth . I don't plan on having kids
