My Boyfriend Recently Had Spinal Fusion Surgery . This Relieved

My boyfriend recently had spinal fusion surgery . This relieved him of pain on his left side and arm but for some reason, he has a lot of pain now in his right shoulder and arm . Is this normal? The doctor mentioned this was probably because he had been strapped down for surgery on that side, but its now a week later and the pain is as intense as when he first got out of surgery . My boyfriend is afraid of going back into surgery to correct this , but I'm hoping this is normal? Ice packs and light massages are not helping.
