My Brother Has Had Bad Stomach Pain For About A

My brother has had bad stomach pain for about a week, he is in the ER now and they are doing a CT scan and think it may be Pancreatitis. I know there are several treatments depending on if it is acute or chronic and there may be a chance of death if it affects the heart and other organs but i wondering how common death is from this and can this eventually lead to cancer? Thanks
