My Daughter Broke Her 3rd Metatarsal (fairly Long Non Displaced

My daughter broke her 3rd metatarsal (fairly long non displaced spiral in the shaft) playing hockey on Saturday. A half plaster and taped fingers and sling was performed at A & E - we subsequently had to return because within 24 hrs this became too tight due to swelling. It was replaced and we were booked into fracture clinic today. Today they confirmed fracture but removed cast and replaced this with what looks like a wrist brace with velcro on the top. This is too small and is digging in to wrist etc (has a steel plate running under palm however it seems an odd treatment as there is no protection on the top of the hand at all and the break is exposed. My daughter (17) is a keen sportswoman and is keen t get this right as hopes to return to high level hockey and tennis - it is her right hand! Any view - just seems odd as eeven hospital website suggests it should be in plaster for 3 -6 weeks?
Thank you
