My Ex Was Tested For Syphilis And At First It

My ex was tested for Syphilis and at first it came back positive, then negative and finally inconclusive. His doctor decided to treat him with a shot just to be safe, but said the chances of him having it were slim and that he didn't think he needed to inform his sexual partners, but he decided to tell me anyway just in case. Is this even possible?
