My Friend Had A Traumatic Amputation Of Several Finger Tips

My friend had a traumatic amputation of several finger tips years ago. The area of one finger is hot, red, and very sensitive to touch...there are no external lesions. What might be causing this...does it need medical attention, or is there something we can do at home? Thanks!
