My Friend Is Having Black Stools. He Has Diarrhea That

My friend is having black stools. He has diarrhea that is thick and kind of shale like. He passes large chunks of food like onion, too. He has dementia and Alzheimer's and does not chew this food well, taking larger than normal bites. Should I suggest to his doctor that he needs a colonoscopy?
