My Grandpa, 82, Had A Compression/burst Fracture Of D12 Vertebral

My grandpa, 82, had a compression/burst fracture of d12 vertebral body with marrow edema. What does this mean and how long will it take to recover? Focal stretching of posterior longitudinal ligament retropulsion into spinal canal focal cord/conus compression and displacement. What does this really mean? How long will it take to recover I believe they are recommending surgery....
