My Grandson Had Bengay Accidentally Applied To His Penis And

My grandson had bengay accidentally applied to his penis and general area for diaper rash, but not heavily. As soon as I heard this occurred, I put him in the bathtub with cool water and liquid soap washing trying to wash the thin layer of bengay off. Is this the correct action? Can we now apply desitin for the diaper rash?
