My Huband Told Me Today He Has Had Some Rectal

My huband told me today he has had some rectal bleeding. We are retired and have been together for almost 20 years so I rule out lifestyle reasons. He thinks it may be hemorrhoids. I have never known him to have that problem before. Is this a symptom of something more serious?
