My Husband Had An MRI And They Found A 1.4

My husband had an MRI and they found a 1.4 cm nodule on his right thyroid. Is this small nodule, medium or large? The doctor's office said something about inhomogenous and he is having a lot of pain on that side of his neck tonight. Could he have cancer and what does this all mean? How serious can this be? If it is cancer, can it spread and how fast growing would a nodule in the thyroid be?
