My Husband Had Uncontrollable Shivering Last Night, But Had No

My husband had uncontrollable shivering last night, but had no fever at the time. After the shivering stopped, which lasted about 10 minutes, he had a fever of 100.3 and his body felt very hot to the touch. He felt slightly sick to his stomach, and his chest felt heavy.
Can you tell me what could have caused this. He has had it once before but not this bad.
