My Husband Has A Constant Pain Like In The Top

My husband has a constant pain like in the top of his esophagus that does get sharper just from eating,drinking,swallowing and even breathing.He has been sick for awhile without going to a doctor.His tongue is white and I just got rid of thrush from antibiotics from where I was in the hospital with pneumonia.He hasn't been on any antibiotics.What do you think could be wrong?
