My Husband Has A Large White Spot On The Side

My husband has a large white spot on the side of his tongue and some on the side of his cheek. It is hard to tell if they are canker sores or not. They have been there for a couple of months. He had a cough from November to March and sucked on Halls cough drops during that time (excessively). Could that be the problem?
