My Husband Has A Very Itchy Rash On His Upper

My husband has a very itchy rash on his upper thigh, very close to his genitals. It is red and covers the area of his upper thigh to where the skin bends for the genitals. I have noticed I have one very similar starting on my upper thigh as well. Is this something we should have checked or can I just treat it with itch cream?
