My Husband Has Been Having Pain In His Right Side/back

My husband has been having pain in his right side/back about four inches above his hip that has gotten progressively worse of the past few weeks. He did not injure himself and does not think it is muscular. I am worried that it could be serious - he is having trouble doing any movement - getting up from a chair is very painful.
