My Husband Has Spinal Stenosis With Herniated Disc That Is

My husband has spinal stenosis with herniated disc that is pressing into it. This is in the L5 region of his back. When and if should he go for surgery. We don't know what to do and am not getting any advice from the doctors or should I say the PA or NO.
